Regular maintenance is imperative to ensuring a long and healthy life for all of your trees and shrubs. The International Society of Arborculture and other professional arborist organizations agree that periodic pruning is essential for the health and appearance of trees. |
|
| As an ISA Certified Arborist, Warren Hastings, owner of Master Tree Care, is dedicated to not only meeting but also exceeding the industry standards. Among the many benefits of periodic pruning are such things as removing dead branches, resolving structural problems, improving the natural appearance of the tree, increasing sunlight and air penetration, enhancing the vitality of the tree, and basic human safety. |
Working with the tree’s natural growth pattern, we always pay diligent attention to the natural characteristics relevant to that particular species. Depending on the purpose of the pruning operation, there are several techniques which can be performed by an experienced arborist. A list of some of these techniques is described below.
- Crown Cleaning: This is primarily a selective branch cleaning that is often needed in landscape trees. Designed to remove dead or diseased branches and also to correct structural problems and crowding, it will restore the tree’s natural beauty and grace.
-
Crown Raising: This involves removing some of the lower branches, and is commonly performed as a safety measure to provide clearance over surrounding buildings, signs, vehicles, and other trees. It also allows more sunlight to reach the grass in early morning and late afternoon.
-
Crown Thinning: Selected branches are removed to allow more sunlight into the middle of the tree and more light on the grass beneath. Thinning opens the foliage of a tree, reduces weight on heavy limbs, and helps retain the tree’s natural shape.
- Crown Reduction: This is used in specific situations to reduce the overall height of a tree, such as under power lines. The tallest limbs are removed back to lateral branches so that the natural form and structural integrity of the tree is preserved.
Note:do not top trees! -
Miscellaneous Pruning: In certain situations, selected scaffold limbs may be removed to provide an unobstructed view. Also, near power lines trees need to be pruned away from the lines. This is a job for a trained Utility Arborist!
