Trees are the most valuable part of your overall landscape. Shrubs, flowers, and even grass can be replaced relatively quickly and inexpensively. It may take a generation or more to replace a mature tree, and can be rather expensive. It is important therefore to consider the proper care and feeding of trees. |
Trees, like other plants, need food and water. Many people assume that when they fertilize their grass they are also feeding their trees. The truth is that every plant in the landscape competes for the water and the nutrients in the soil. Since tree roots are typically four to ten inches below the ground, the grass gets the lion’s share of the fertilizer that is applied on the surface. To effectively feed the tree, deep root fertilization must be used.
Master Tree Care employs a method of deep root fertilization in which small holes are drilled about eight inches deep, three feet apart. These holes are then filled with slow-release granular fertilizer. The whole area under the drip line of the tree is fertilized in this manner. In addition to fertilizing the tree, this method is also effective in aerating the soil around the roots.
Without additional treatment, the nutrients and minerals in the soil are eventually depleted. Symptoms of malnutrition in a tree include slow growth, smaller leaves than normal, and chlorosis or yellowing of the leaves out of season. To promote vitality and beautiful, healthy trees, we strongly recommend an annual tree fertilization program. Of course healthy trees also require an abundant source of water.
