| Cabling and bracing are techniques which arborists use to provide additional support to a tree which has structural problems where a large limb could split off, severely damaging the tree. Such problems occur frequently in landscape trees where there are two fairly equal trunks with a narrow crotch, called “co-dominant stems.” As the trunks continue to grow together, bark is pressed together on the inside. This makes for a very weak joint because there is no bonding together of the trunks. The bark eventually begins to deteriorate and rot, and the joint is usually invaded by insects. In a strong wind the trunks can split apart, often resulting in the loss of half the tree. |
Cabling involves attaching a high strength steel cable to two major limbs, thus effectively limiting the movement of the limbs in a high wind. Cabling can also be used for greater support (1) when a limb is extremely heavy, (2) in a multi-trunk tree, or (3) where some damage has already occurred, such as a crack in a main crotch. The placement of the cable is extremely important to be effective.
Bracing is a different procedure in which a steel rod is inserted through the weak crotch and the ends are then bolted together, thus giving additional support and strength. |
